Waste collection runs smoother when your trash, recycling, and organic waste is set out correctly. Fix these 5 easy mistakes to make sure your set-outs are collected mess free:
1. Not Setting Out Trash in a Rigid Container
Loose bags left on the can curb tear open, attract pests, and scatter debris before the truck even arrives. Besides being required by NYC law, a rigid container keeps waste contained and makes pickup faster for our workers. Our sales representatives will help you pick the right-sized container for your volume, but if you start generating more waste you can check Boro-Wide’s container options and reach out for an upgrade.
2. Overfilling Containers
Overflowing bins mean loose trash on the ground, lids that won’t close, and a container that’s too heavy to service safely. If you’re consistently overfilling, it’s a sign you need a larger container or an extra pickup day. You can call customer Boro-Wide’s service at 718-567-5000 ext 2 or fill out our Contact Support form to review your options.
3. Setting Out Waste Too Early or Too Late
Waste set out too early sits out longer, drawing pests and creating odor. Set out too late, and you miss the truck entirely. NYC rules require businesses to place waste in a container with a secure lid at the curb 1 hour before closing.
4. Mixing Recycling in with Trash (Oops!)
This one’s common, and it’s an easy fix. Recycling and trash need to stay in separate containers. Mixing them can contaminate a full load of recyclables, and will incur penalties for repeated contamination. Label containers clearly and make sure staff know what goes where to reduce the risk of accidental mixing.
5. Making Containers Hard to Access
Containers blocked by parked cars, stacked pallets, or locked gates slow down collection and can result in missed pickups. Keep a clear path to your containers on collection day. A few feet of clearance saves time for the crew and keeps your service on schedule.
